Eric Garner died in July at the hands of a New York City police officer. The incident was caught on camera, as were his last words, "I can't breathe". Although the city medical examiner ruled Eric’s death a homicide, the cop wasn’t indicted for a crime and protests are popping off everywhere in response.
I decided to consult with the tarot on this subject and have created a spread out of Eric Garner’s initials called, Initial Discussion.
Initial Discussion is a ten-card tarot spread, so for easy Internet consumption I’ve broken it up into a two part blog. Part One, the letter ‘E’ for Eric, which is comprised of questions one through five, is below. Part One poses questions to Eric directly. Part Two, the Letter ‘G’ for Garner, made up of questions six through ten, is here. Part Two asks the universe to address how Eric’s death impacts the collective.
Initial Discussion Part One, Questions:
Where are you now?
What do you want people to know about your life?
What do you want people to know about your death?
What message do you want to deliver to your loved ones?
Why did you die?
Initial Discussion with Eric Garner Part One, Answers/Results:
Where are you now? Princess of Swords
What do you want people to know about your life? Two of Cups Reversed
What do you want people to know about your death? Two of Swords
What message do you want to deliver to your loved ones? Four of Cups
Why did you die? Wheel of Fortune Reversed (left read as reversal)
1. Where are you now? Princess of Swords
Princess of Swords isn’t a dark place, in fact it’s an ebullient realm of intellectual gusto replete with sunshine. Princess is of the element earth and Swords represents air. Princesses are pubescent adolescents. Like the eagle present in this image, he has risen above the planet, probably to a higher dimensional plane; “Looking down from the sky”. But he remains alive on 3D earth through newspapers (a direct manifestation of air + earth energies, ideas being conveyed via paper). People are also taking their air ideas to the earth ground via expressing their mind in real time through protest on the streets. It’s not a coincidence the animal featured in this card is emblematic of all things rugged Americana; it’s clear Eric is pointing our attention to flight through people’s brains. Other words, his name is entering and exiting human skulls as folks converse about him. Just his name alone brings an eagle-eye perspicacity to nationalism, igniting dynamic growth as America accepts its pubescent patriotic growing pains. The sun shines on the bald eagle’s head, it is a fierce aura.
2. What do you want people to know about your life? Two of Cups Reversed
In this Cosmic Tarot deck, the Two of Cups imagery depicts two embraced lovers, a classic Hollywood film scene manipulated to fit into one particular director’s aesthetic. Message here is: “It ain’t what ya heard!” A large amount of what’s broadcast about him is scripted, contrived. The astrological representation of Two of Cups is Venus in Cancer; mother goddess love planet combined with mother goddess astrology sign. It’s all love. The reversal here suggests, “I get no love. Where’s the love yo?” It seems to be calling attention to fiction with Two of Cups reversed; widespread media mania based on archaic, fabricated blanket notions about what it means to be acceptable in the USofA. If you want to know the real deal about his life talk with his wife, loved ones, his peoples; don’t imbibe hysterical stories generated by long outdated American social tropes.
3. What do you want people to know about your death? Two of Swords
The woman in Two of Swords has her eyes closed and is in complete darkness, save for moonlight. A couple trippy things to point out here: two birds are flying in alignment with luna in this card (hearkens back to Princess of Swords’ eagle) and this is the second card we pulled from the “two” numbers in the deck. On a numerological level, twos represent the moon in tarot. Two of Swords is Moon in Libra, a cardinal astrological air sign (eagle’s wings) symbolized by the scales of justice. Literally, Two of Swords here states: “Blind justice”. Dude, Eric’s death was on videotape, clear and plain as day. How is him gasping for air after being choked to death not apparent? Only the blind can’t see it (woman with her eyes closed). The moon impacts circadian rhythm on a lunar level, a la intuition; the watery depths depicted through the swampy lake in this card’s image. As a collective whole tied to circadian rhythms too expansive and beyond our intellectual capacity to justify through conscious understanding, in a heart-driven space of infinite time, we know as a species connected unilaterally to the galactic essence of a nebulous universe his death was wrong. That moon-led Venus-driven Libran justice, serve it up.
4. What message do you want to deliver to your loved ones? Four of Cups
Four of Cups is a meditative card with a direct connection to Two of Cups Reversed and Two of Swords in this reading (2 x 2 = 4). Four of Cups is Moon in Cancer and numerologically, the number four is ruled by the Earth and Sun. In astrology-talk, Cancer rules the moon, it’s natural for luna to be there. Mourning is natural, don’t denigrate Self for crying and feeling aloof. However, rock the four energy, make something out of the Earth and Sun’s ability to manifest. In consonance with the conversation of the Twos here, it’s clear Eric wants loved ones to continue to cultivate honour in his image (Two of Cups reversed connection) and to use his name to bring forth justice (Two of Swords). Four of Cups traditionally represents dismissing opportunities, not seeing what’s right before you. Get creative with how Eric is honored: carry out justice through art installations, make your tears resonate in the core of every human being’s gut. Think outside of the box and take advantage of what’s on hand.
5. Why did you die? Wheel of Fortune Reversed (left read as reversal)
Wheel of Fortune is a Major Arcana, which is a section of the tarot deck connected to super deep universal soul lessons. Wheel of Fortune to the left is read as reversed in this reading, meaning, his death calls attention to misfortune on a grand scale. He died to shed light on collective injustice, simple as.

Notes on the ethics of this reading:
I asked Eric Garner’s soul for permission to interview him via tarot before this reading took place through various spiritual practices. Once I got the ‘OK’ from him, I proceeded with the Initial Discussion.
Spirit (i.e. the collective consciousness of the universe) is always accessible, Source energy is everything, so no permission necessary, just ask.
These are all Clarissa Dolphin’s interpretations of the cards pulled in response to questions posed to Souls and Spirit. This is an interdimensional editorial meant to give voice to the ether and will not suffice as a 3D-plane left-brained piece composed to provide an in-depth analysis on the socio-political implications of this man’s death.
Spirit refers collective consciousness of the universe, the source of all existence.
Ancestors in this instance refers to the collective family line.
